Marx's celebrated essay of 1843 is here reprinted by Ernst Rowohlt Verlag as part of an ongoing series of pamphlets on substantial cultural, political, and social matters. It stands as one of Marx's proto-attempts to analyze culture and history from a materialist point of view. The (in)famous final sentence has long headlined the debate about Marx's implied or inferrable anti-Semitism: "Die gesellschaftliche Emanzipation des Juden ist die Emanzipation der Gesellschaft vom Judentum." Wehe mir!
