Very Good / Very Good. Item #7033
New York: Houghton Mifflin, 2000. First Edition. Signed and inscribed on title page: "For Craig Montgomery / with best wishes / Arthur M. Scheslinger, Jr." Octavo; xv + 557pp, including index. Eight pages of B&W photographs of the Schlesinger family and young Arthur.
Photographic dust jacket in white, black, and gold. Black quarter cloth with gilt spine lettering; black boards. White jacket is almost as new, with only slight curl at bottom of front, slight crinkle at crown of spine; binding and textblock unmarred and unmarked.
Professorial and insightful Mr. Schlesinger opens this first part of his autobiography with an epigraph from Omar Khayyám and closes it with a quotation from Tocqueville. How wistful it makes one feel for the days when America's public intellectuals were literate.
