Good. Item #7089
London: R. Baldwin, 1772. First Edition. Octavo (20.5cm.); removed; -200pp.; woodcut illus. First leaf separated but present and trimmed close affecting text on verso with brief loss of sense, lacking portrait plate of Dr. William Robertson, though otherwise Good and mostly fresh.
Single issue of the popular English monthly magazine, this number including a humorous essay on the "Macaroni," the comically fashionable English fellows who populated late 18th century London, "a fantastical Biped, moving with constraint and affectation under a load of dress, the weight of which is alleviated by vacancy of thought" (p. 194). The essay is adorned with a wonderful woodcut illustration of such a creature, his head weighed down by a massive bean-shaped swirl of hair.
