Carpenter spent six months at the White House studying Lincoln and his cabinet in real life and from photos from Matthew Brady in study for his famous painting, "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln." The painting now hangs in the U.S. Capitol.
Boards are worn at extremities with brief exposure and split along joints.Top of rear joint exposed along top third. Some staining. Front hinge cracked and rear hinge starting. Binding holding. Previous owner's name in pencil to front free endpaper.
