Very Good. Item #7285
Paris: Charpentier, Librairie-Éditeur, 1867. Small Octavo: Vol I 356pp; Vol II 297pp; Vol III 455pp; Vol IV 428pp; Vol V 372pp; Vol VI 372pp; Vol VII 353pp; Vol VIII 308pp; Vol IX 248pp. Entirely in French.
Quarter-bound in umber morocco with raised spine bands and gilt lettering. Boards in umber tourniquet marbling; endpapers in umber shell marbling. Six of nine volumes retain bound-in green silk bookmark.
Some chafing to leather of joints and raised spine bands. Spines faded with a few scratches; gilt lettering still complete and bright. Panel edges and corners lightly abraded. Joints and hinges very solid; tightness of binding suggests little use. Textblocks unmarred and unmarked, though we did find one French marginal notation in contemporary ink on one of the plays. Textblocks trimmed, though with a couple preliminary or final publisher's leaves unopened. Excellent paper shows some minimal foxing but no acid-browning or brittling. The third volume has a numerical label—145—on the front pastedown.
Musset's "complete" works were published in several configurations by Charpentier, including 8-, 9-, 10- and 11-volume arrangements of largely the same material. This is the complete 9-volume edition, not a defective assortment from the 10- or 11- volume sets.
