Moving to Kansas to homestead in 1874, Bartholomew became a well-known and respected horticulturist and botanist. His work The Fungus Flora of Kansas, published in 1927, cataloged 1,829 species in Kansas, nearly quadrupling the 465 species previously identified. Upon his death in 1934, his 40,000 specimen herbarium was acquired by Harvard University.
