One of a series of three adaptations penned by Irish author John Banville based on the tragedies of the Romantic German playwright Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811). Kleist's work, based on the titular Amazonian queen, gave his contemporary Wolfgang von Goethe great pause at the prospect at ever producing it. Banville has had slightly better luck, his "Love in the Wars" appeared as part of the Bard College Summerscape program the year of publication.
