Irish poet and educator Thomas MacDonagh's thesis for the degree of Master of Arts at University College, Dublin, focusing on the poetry of the English author Thomas Campion (1567-1620), and concluding with "a complete treatise on English Metrics and Rime" (p. vii). A year after the publication of this work, MacDonagh attended the first meeting of the nationalist Irish Volunteers and would go on to sign the Irish Declaration of Independence in 1916. He was executed later that year at the age of thirty-eight for his role in the Easter Rising.
