Caresse was known as the literary godmother of the Lost Generation, and also received the first patent for the modern bra. Her husband Harry Crosby's suicide pact, or murder suicide (evidence was inconclusive) with his "Fire Princess," Josephine Rotch, in New York in 1929 caused a scandal and sensational articles ran for days. Caresse would continue to be a patron of the arts and to run Black Sun Press for years after.
