Bound in contemporary half sheep over marbled boards with spine stamped in gilt. Boards worn at extremities with brief exposure. Blemish affecting gilt lettering and crude touch-ups to joints. Binding is sound. Some foxing to pages but legible throughout.
Hawthorne's second book and first published under his name, expanded in 1842 to two volumes. While sales of the volumes were slow, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Edgar Allen Poe were enthusiastic reviewers, with Poe proclaiming, "The style of Mr. Hawthorne is purity itself." Includes "The Wedding Knell," "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," and "The Minister's Black Veil," among others.
