Very Good / Very Good. Item #9026

Taipei: Cathay Art Museum, 1979. First Edition (both volumes). Folio (each 39x27x2.5cm); leaves of heavy daolin paper; specifics below for textblocks and illustrations. In both Chinese and English. Chinese text is vertical throughout, reading top to bottom and right to left.

Both volumes are bound bi-directionally. For Western readers, the spine is on the left and the title page follows normally, followed by the Table of Contents. For Chinese readers, the spine is on the right, the Chinese title page follows normally (as what Westerners would consider the last printed page in each volume), and the Table of Contents follows (or precedes) normally. (See photographs for reversible handling of spine.) Roman numerals are used for pagination, but they run in the reverse of Western expectations; continuous pagination handled unusually: it increases per leaf for image sections, per page during sections of text.

Vol I: "The Masterpieces of Huang Ping-hong, Jsu Pei-hung and Chen Shih-cheng"
— pagination as printed: [vi] + 79pp + [iii]
— actual leaves: 80
— 66 images of birds, animals (notably horses), couplets, seals, landscapes, still lives, hanging scrolls
— six extended images on gatefolds

Vol II: "The Works of Eight Masters in Stone and Bronze Inscription School of Late 100 Years"
— pagination as printed: [viii] + 96pp + [iv]
— actual leaves: 91
— 72 images of couplets, seals, landscapes, still lives, hanging scrolls
— eight extended images on gatefolds

Pictorial dust jackets. Volumes bound in mauve-lilac silk with metallic cobalt stamping. Dust jackets show the polite faint smudges of long shelving; Vol I has closed tears (3cm and 1.5cm) at top edge of "Western" surface; Vol II has 10cm closed tear descending from top edge of Chinese surface. Pastedowns show some rippling, and boards some warping—effects of original binding materials, not moisture damage. Textblocks clearly perused, but unmarred and unmarked.

The private Cathay Museum in Taipei specialized in 19th and 20th century "modern" Chinese art. It was the undertaking of Chennan Cai [Chen-nan Tsai], Taiwanese businessman and collector, whose name is positioned as "author" on these volumes. The Cathay Museum closed in 2010 when its collections were dispersed partly into private hands, and partly as the foundational modern collection of the National Palace Museum. These are the first two volumes of the six-volume series cataloguing the preeminent pieces in the Cathay Museum's holdings.
