Very Good / Very Good. Item #9448
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1951 (but possibly later). Modern Standard Authors series reprint. Octavo; xxv, 473pp. Printed red and white dust jacket with no price and Modern Standard Authors advert to back panel; book in black and marigold buckram boards with silver lettering. Deckled edges. Jacket shows a very faint dampstain at bottom front, with chipping and shallow tears to spine ends (with head mended on inside with amateur tape repair), and with some general toning and smudging to surface. Boards lightly bumped at corners and spine ends. Binding is sound and pages unmarked. Small cardstock with printing of Bowdoin College president William DeWitt Hyde's "The Offer of the College" laid in.
Scribner's Modern Standard Authors series advertised itself as "Good Reading for College Classes," and made a number of better-known Scribner's authors available in less-expensive editions aimed at college campuses. Typesetting appears identical to the first printing, including the Scribner's seal and "A" on copyright, but with an added series banner on title page and modifications to the binding and jacket. Not in Bruccoli.
