Very Good / Very Good. Item #9549
Tokyo: San Ko Sha, 1930. First Edition. Octavo (22.5x16x2cm); + iii + 272pp + 2pp of publisher's advertising. Tables of katakana and hiragana ideographs throughout, though instruction itself is entirely in English. Salmon dustjacket printed in black. Boards in dark khaki paper backed with marigold spine, lettered in gilt.
Jacket soiled from use, above all on spine, where losses have occurred at both crown and foot. One rudimentary attempt at ideographs by previous owner, perhaps a child, on inner back flap. Volume shows some insect nibbling at foot of spine; textblock lightly tanned.
Kikue Ojima published a series of 12 such volumes (of which this is the fifth) between the two world wars. Nigh on to a century later, it is hard to deduce exactly who his English-speaking audience was.
