Shanghai: Kwang Hsueh Publishing House, 1933. "Fifteenth Thousand" printing. 16mo (14x11x1.5cm); viii + 237pp + "Radical Index" of 70pp. Brown-black pebbled leatherette with gilt spine lettering and rules. Cover shows one white paint-like spot (1 cm) and several white speckles. Joints and hinges solid; textblock unmarred and unmarked.

Chauncey Goodrich (1836-1925) first published his pocket dictionary in 1891, "at T'ungchow, near Peking," with the American Presbyterian Mission Press. The press had been founded in 1844 and would become the "largest and most sophisticated Protestant missionary printing enterprise among the Chinese," per Chinese historian and scholar Suzanne Wilson Barnett. Our volume was printed by Kwang Hsueh Press, in Shanghai, in 1933.
