Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #9932
New York: Matthew Marks Gallery, 1993. First Edition. Signed by Brice Marden on title page; double association details below. Quarto (23x25x2cm); too sophisticated to be paginated, but we counted anyway: [84pp]. Main body is preceded by 15 full-page color photographs of the Marden studio by David Seidner. The main body reproduces 67 Marden paintings in color.
Photographic dust jacket. Taupe-gray cloth boards with blind-stamped spine lettering.
In addition to Marden's signature on the title page, the volume includes a double-association card laid in. Matthew Marks, the renowned New York gallerist and Marden's dealer, had the volume signed by Marden for Brenda Richardson, renowned director of the Baltimore Museum of Art at the time. Marden, Marks, and Richardson were all formidable figures on the East Coast art scene—the national art scene, in fact—when this volume passed from hand to hand to hand.
The note reads: "Dear Brenda, Enclosed (finally!) is the catalogue for my exhibition with Brice last spring. He signed this copy for you. I hope you are well and wish you all the best in 1994. Sincerely, Matthew."
