Capitol Hill Books is a bookstore located in the Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill in Washington DC, featuring three floors of used, new, and rare books. We also have a small warehouse in Hyattsville, MD which serves as the hub for our rare book and online operation.

The application period is currently closed for the following positions:

 

Position: Full-time Bookseller

 

Location: Washington, DC and Hyattsville, MD

Position Summary: Capitol Hill Books is hiring a full-time Bookseller, whose principal duties will include assisting or running afternoon and evening operations of our brick and mortar bookstore on Capitol Hill. This bookseller would spend the majority of their time staffing our front check-out desk, pricing store stock, shelving and organizing the unruly stacks, and would be responsible for closing the store down five nights a week. Store shifts would generally run from 3pm until closing at 8pm (7pm on Sundays). 

Additional work time is required at our Rare/Online Book Annex in Hyattsville, MD. Duties here include book photography, photo editing, packing and shipping, and cataloging. This position is for 30 to 40 hours/week and includes working evenings and weekends.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Experience in the book trade, a library setting, or literary/journalistic trades preferred

  • Familiarity with the vocabulary of the book trade and bibliographic practices preferred

  • Wide-ranging knowledge of literature and history preferred

  • Proficiency in Google Applications such as Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar. Word processing and spreadsheet experience preferred.

  • Ability to multitask while paying great attention to detail

  • Demonstrated prioritization skills and ability to meet weekly deadlines

  • Collaboration skills

  • Strong, demonstrable writing skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally in person and over email without grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.

  • Customer focus at all times

  • Ethical conduct in all areas

Pay: $18-22/hr, commensurate with experience

Position: Part-Time Bookseller

 

Location: Washington, DC

This position is for 25 hours/week and includes working weekends and evenings.
