New York: A.O. Moore, Agricultural Book Publisher, 1858. Reprint. Octavo; publisher's brown cloth, covers blind-embossed with the image of a fish, gilt-lettered spine; 142,[2](ads)pp.; four leaves of plates and myriad text illus. throughout. Cloth a bit scuffed with chipping and fraying at spine ends and corners rather bumped, foxing throughout textblock, else a Very Good, still quite attractive copy overall. (Initial photo a bit over-exposed to better catch fish-stamping.)

Early printing of arguably the first work on the subject. The author, Theodatus Garlick (1805-1884), was a man of many diverse interests, practicing and pioneering plastic surgery throughout his storied career; producing wax medallions of such renowned subjects as President Andrew Jackson and Chief Justice John Marshall; and creating the first daguerreotype in the city of Cleveland. The present work fully displays the author's passion for fish: the speckled trout is "charming," the black bass "noble," while the white perch is "beautiful" and "abundant." For additional information see the DAB Vol. 7, pp. 152-3.
