Columbus: Ohio State Journal Company, 1854. Good. Item #14380

Columbus: Ohio State Journal Company, 1854. Second, Enlarged Edition. Octavo (7.75" x 5.25"); [vi], 135pp. Thirty-two plates, including one folding, all present. Publisher's blindstamped blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Dark topstain.

Boards worn and soiled, with faded dampstaining and fading along edges and spine, some shallow chipping at spine ends, and rubbing along edges and corners. Spine mottled and cocked, with lettering dulled. Dampstaining at top and bottom fore-edge corners throughout, occasionally touching text or illustrations but mostly remaining in margins. Moderate to mild toning and foxing to pages and endpapers, with some offsetting opposite illustrations. Neat tape repairs to fold-out at folds, with no loss. Three of the additional five illustrations noted on contents in pencil along with one pagination correction ("Lunatic Asylum, Columbus" bound at p. 60 vs. 57), else pages unmarked. Binding opens easily between a few gatherings but is secure.

Enlarged from the 1852 First Edition. List of Illustrations omits five of the present plates -- Cleveland Station (p 83), West Branch, Rocky River, Near Olmstead Station (p84,), East branch, Rocky River, Berea Station (p. 85); Elk Creek (p. 97); Bridge, Grand River (p 100) -- and notes a map at front title, though the foldout is actually an illustration titled "View of Station Buildings and Lake Erie at Cleveland." Howes notes a map in the 1852 edition but both he and Sabin only note plates in this volume, leaving us to guess that the Station View was the intended frontis foldout in this volume and the map was listed on the contents in error.
