Folio (33cm.); original cream pictorial cloth chemise stamped in black and gilt, red cloth and paper-covered flaps; [4]pp. and 25 loose plates (as issued) of pale blue card stock printed in red to which are mounted twenty-eight half-tone illustrations, title page printed within architectural border in red and black; text entirely in blackletter. Cloth a bit soiled and spine ends scuffed, else a Very Good or better set, contents in near fine condition.
Lavishly produced collection of illustrations by the German painter featuring his major specialty, the equestrian arts. This suite appears to feature sketches and drawings executed from an extended study of circus performers in action and at rest, with special emphasis on equestrian prowess. Of special note here are the female equestrians and acrobats performing such feats as the "Jeu de Baguette" and the "Bandeau manoeuvre," while other studies focus on the "violon clowns" and the "Künstliche Elephant," an oversized elephant costume for two.
