Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin, 1797. Very Good. Item #25868

Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin, 1797. First Edition. Octavo; full contemporary calf, gilt-lettered spine label; [4],516pp. ([A]2 B-3R4 3S2, collated complete). Very slightly ex-Williston Public Library with their discreet and sparse internal markings, contemporary ownership signatures to front free endpaper (separated but present) of a Roderick Messenger and a Sally Coleman (?), along with facetious manuscript note on title page following the text "from a number of ministers": "And from the Reverend Dr. Dryasdust" ("Dryasdust" underlined). Overall Very Good.

Collection of nineteen sermons by the leading men of God of the age, harshly adjudged too dry by the contemporary reader. We beg to differ. John Stevens in his sermon titled "The Church of Christ essentially the same, in all Ages," reminds us that "Paul frequently declares, that outward circumcision is not sufficient, but it must be accompanied with that of the heart" (pp. 72-3).
