Illustrated dustjacket in metallic gold and three colors. Jade green boards with dark green lettering and frieze on front panel. Jacket unclipped with shallowly docked inner flaps, as published. The jacket shows some rubbing (particularly on the metallic gold) at edges and corners, with minor chips at spine crown and foot. Some general slight soiling from respectful handling. Minimal toning to endpapers and textblock, otherwise unmarred and unmarked. Small prior owner's signature on front pastedown, else interior unmarked. Binding is sound.

This volume was the runner-up for the Caldecott Medal in 1938—the year the medal was inaugurated.
