Manuscript Draft of the Poem "The Light of Love"
Albany, NY: 1900. Very Good. Item #28527
Albany, NY: n.d., ca. 1900. Manuscript draft written on a prescription script signed "J.W. Riley." Stock a bit toned along margins, previous horizontal fold, else Very Good.
Apparently an early draft of the poet's "The Light of Love," scribbled here on a prescription script from the office of Charles A. Perry of 218 Quail Street, Albany, and published in a substantially different (and much improved) form in the author's 1905 collection "Songs o' Cheer." The present version leads with a verse entirely removed from the finished draft:
"If the rain descended & the winds blew, how cheerful was the [?] fire & a good book. For what have we to fear/ From night or rain or winds above, With love and laughter here?"
