Octavo; publisher's tan blind-embossed cloth, gilt-lettered spine, black glazed endpapers; xiv,275,[1],[18](ads)pp.; frontispiece and pictorial title page printed in red and black. Cloth moderately rubbed at margins, minute exposure at corners, spine a shade darkened and cocked, brief paint (?) soil to rear cover, textblock uniformly toned and very slightly spotted at preliminaries, contemporary bookseller ticket to rear pastedown, else a Very Good, still quite attractive copy.

Narrative of the British Colonel's travels to the American West in 1868, beginning with the voyage out aboard the Cunard steamship "Russia": "A case of champagne, which we brought from London, we found of great assistance in preventing sea-sickness" (p.2). Thanks to General Sherman, the author was then able to join a scouting party across the plains of Kansas and Nebraska and on to San Francisco.
