London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1773. First Edition. Two volumes (21cm.); full contemporary speckled calf, green and red gilt spine labels; [12],374; [8],287pp. (collated complete with half titles); folding engraved map frontispiece of Sicily and Malta at head of Vol. I. Leather rather scuffed and dried, front joint of Vol. I quite tender and starting to separate along top half of spine edge, flaking of leather to both volumes, light foxing to early leaves, else a Very Good set, internally fresh and sound, issued with the elusive map.

Contemporary armorial ex libris of Thos. Smyth to both pastedowns as well as a manuscript note at the end of the Advertisement in Vol. I: "Several citations from Latin authors that were intended for Notes have been inserted in the text by mistake."

A highly popular and oft-reprinted account of the author's travels, the "Liveliness of description of manners and scenery, couched in an easy and elegant style, has rendered these volumes extremely popular" (Cox). Fanny Burney was a fan, James Boswell less so.
