Code des Fumeurs et des Priseurs; ou, L'Art de Fumer et de Priser sans déplaire aux belles

Paris: Roy-Terry, 1830. Very Good. Item #31288

Paris: Roy-Terry, 1830. Second Edition. 12mo; late 19th-century half brown morocco over marbled boards by American binder E. Bau of Philadelphia, gilt-lettered spine in five compartments, marbled endpapers; [4],175pp.; folding engraved frontispiece. Moderate rubbing to leather margins, especially at spine crown, textblock rather foxed and browned throughout, else a Very Good, sound copy overall.

Scarce comic treatise on all things tobacco. First published in 1827 in a print run quickly exhausted according to the introduction to this edition, the work provides the tobacco enthusiast lessons on how to be a smoker without putting off the ladies in a series of simple steps. As well as having a new introduction, this edition is also embellished with a delightful frontispiece depicting two group portraits captioned "Les Fumeurs" (the smokers) and "Les Priseurs" (the snuff takers). All the smokers are men and quite forbidding-looking, all the snuff takers are women and quite content-looking.

Both this and the first edition are rare: OCLC locates copies of this edition at Harvard, Duke, and the Free Library of Philadelphia only as of November, 2024.
