Illus. throughout. One (1) fold-out map, printed both sides (65 cm). Thin, dark teal cloth boards with gilt stamping. All page edges red stained. Boards scuffed and bumped, bowing out at fore-edge with corners lightly worn. Cloth exposed at both endsheet gutters but binding sound and firm. Endsheets and title page offset from facing text and glue. Fold-out map, previous owner-repaired with plastic tape, sitting proud, folded incorrectly and creased overall. Pages relatively clean with some penciled text. A Very Good example.

Meant as a guide for those traveling on the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads, this little book is packed with information like where to stay and what to do in most places you may pass through, like Truckee City, California, where a stage coach visits Donner Lake to fish for "silver trout." The guide also gives a history of most places and is illustrated to show the beauty of what you might see, like the Great American Canyon in the Sierra Mountains. A previous owner found it important to leave the memorandum pages empty but note on the sketch of Brigham Young that he had 19 wives and 56 children, just in case it popped up in conversation along the ride.
