United States: 1960. Large, slim quarto (30.5cm); original cord-bound decorative black and gilt boards, "Scrap Book" to upper cover; [50]pp. filled to completion with seventy-eight (78) magazine clippings captioned in manuscript ink, the two-paged carbon typescript describing the assignment for this Home Decoration scrapbook mounted to final two leaves. Moderate wear to binding including a few surface scratches, chiefly to rear cover, stock uniformly browned due to inferior paper quality, else Very Good and sound. Carolyn McFall's name on front pastedown, with the date and grade in bottom left-hand corner (6/16/60 - "Excellent Work / 95").

Compelling interior decoration school assignment dated 1960, the pinnacle of midcentury modern design. In true fashion the student has chosen for her ideal home a midcentury modern-style ranch home in Ithaca, New York, designed for a growing family. McFall likes it for its "simple modern design" that "fits well in the location." McFall also provides her ideal carpeting and linoleum for kitchen and bathroom (emphasis on color and luxury); her favorite draperies and silverware (the latter by Oneida); and her favorite furniture--Danish modern.

In between she also explores color schemes (monochromatic, complementary, analogous, and split complementary), balance (formal vs. informal), and rhythm and radiation, chiefly in the form of artwork and floral arrangements. Perhaps the only anachronism is in the children's bedrooms: the designs McFall was most drawn to feature walls painted with scenes from Disney—Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, and Goofy. .
