El lugar sin limites

Mexico: Joaquin Mortiz, 1966. Very Good -. Item #33776

Mexico: Joaquin Mortiz, 1966. Limited First Edition of 4200, this being number 4066. 12mo (18cm); illustrated wraps; 140pp. Covers quite worn and creased with spotting and soiling; a bit over-glued along interior gutters. Spine cocked. A few old stains and ghosts of sticker labels to endpapers; ownership inscription to half title; pages toned but unmarked. A Good to Very Good copy of what Donoso called, "my most finished work, something like a perfect concerto for violin and piano." (our translation).

The novel explores themes of gender identity, sexual performance, and power and class structures through the experiences of Manuela, a transvestite running a bordello in Santiago, Chile. Written and published in a time of great social upheaval and cultural change in Chile, this early and important Donoso work remains in print and is continually reinterpreted, though the first edition is remarkably elusive.
