A Concert of 20th Century American Music [Poster]

New York: New School for Social Research, 1964. Very Good. Item #39752

New York: The New School for Social Research, 1964. Pictorial broadside flyer (34x24cm). Light wear and smudging. Small tear at right edge; small punctures at top edge, likely a result of pushpins. Verso toned. Folded once vertically and three times horizontally, possibly for mailing. A Very Good copy of this scarce piece of experimental music ephemera.

Visually compelling poster announcing a performance by avant-garde composers and musicians, including John Cage, Earle Brown, Philip Corner, Malcolm Goldstein, James Tenney, Carl Ruggles, and Charles Ives. Something of a homecoming for Cage, who taught courses in experimental music at the New School between 1956–1961. Designed by Carolee Schneeman, primarily a performance artist involved in New York's Downtown scene. In the early 60s, Schneeman and Cage were introduced by Schneeman's partner, James Tenney, who also participated in this concert. Schneeman and Cage fostered a fruitful artistic relationship that lasted for the remainder of their careers.

As of April 2026, we locate no separately cataloged copies in OCLC.
