Denver, CO: W.H. Jackson & Co., n.d., ca. 1880s. Collection of five albumen photograph stereoviews taken by the Denver-based photography studio of William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). Light wear and soil to margins, though images are both of excellent quality and in excellent condition.
Collection of photographs taken for the expanding tourist market of the American West. William Jackson first cut his teeth as a landscape photographer in the 1870s after securing an order of 10,000 images from the Union Pacific Railroad while it was still under construction. "The technical challenges that Jackson faced—outfitting a portable darkroom, for example—proved to be invaluable field experience" (American National Biography). Jackson established his commercial photography studio in Denver in 1879 where it remained until 1898. This collection of photographs all bear the Denver studio's stamp.
The collection includes views of Uncompagre Peak, Upper Twin Lake, the Royal Gorge ("Grand Canon of the Arkansas"), and Dump Mountain from Mule Shoe ("Vita Pass Series"). Also included here a very sweet portrait of a young and wide-eyed Native American child in their carrier leaning against a log cabin wall. The child is identified on verso in pencil: "Papoose of Ute Chief Peah [sic]." Chief Piah, a.k.a. Peter Snow, had his portrait taken at Jackson's Denver studio--perhaps this candid image of his child was taken during that visit. .
