Two octavo volumes; modern calf spine with five raised bands and leather title labels over linen covered boards; edges stained yellow; new endpapers; 248; 238pp. Light rubbing and toning to boards; binding sound; ink annotations to preliminaries of volume I, else unmarked. A Very Good or better copy of an early (first?) Irish edition, published the same year as the London first. Smollett's narrative inspired Laurence Sterne's reply through his novel "A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy," in which Smollett was portrayed as Smelfungus.
