Rare example of a post-Civil War steamboat pilot's license, issued in Pittsburgh "In accordance with the Act of Congress, approved August 30, 1852." The document certifies for one year that Matthias Altman (1832-1898) could operate on the lines of the Ohio & Monongahela, "from Brownsville to Pittsburgh to Louisville, KY." The document is signed by two inspectors as well as Matthias Altman himself, on February 13, 1866. Altman was still an active steamboat operator out of Pittsburgh as of the 1880 census.
