Design Game

Krannert Art Museum / University of Illinois: Champagne, IL, 1971. Very Good -. Item #47133

Champagne, IL: Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois, 1971. First Edition. Square quarto; original white pictorial double folder (19cm) containing twenty-seven (27) design elements (six colors, eight shapes, six lines, and seven textures) as well as one folded table of contents. Folder worn especially along spine with long closed tear at spine crown, though contents remain clean and sound. About Very Good.

Scarce educational game designed for children of pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and primary grade ages. "The Design Game is used to increase visual awareness and sensitivity to design, as design exists in art and in the environment." Children visiting the museum were to be given a kit as an aide when observing the art of any given exhibition, selecting design cards from the packet when encountered.

This example may be a prototype, the card stock used for the different design cards evidently used from recycled scraps. The list of contents indicates that this set is complete, though the set described in OCLC calls for 30 design cards. In any case examples are rare: we locate no copies in the trade and just three institutional copies, at U. Arizona, the Krannert Art Museum, and U. Penn.
