Hunting Indians in a Taxi-Cab

Boston: Richard G. Badger / Gorham Press, 1911. Very Good. Item #47588

Boston: Richard G. Badger / Gorham Press, 1911. First Edition. Slim octavo (23cm); publisher's red pictorial cloth stamped in gilt, top edge gilt; 74pp.; full-page halftone illus. throughout. Rubbing to cloth margins, brief paper scarring to front pastedown from removed ex libris, textblock uniformly toned, else a Very Good, bright and sound example.

"To make my title complete, it should read 'Hunting Indians in a Taxi-cab with a *Camera*" (p. [13], emphasis ours). Despite the title, offensive as it is, this is a rather benign documentary study of that popular tranche of American street-level folk iconography, the Cigar Star Indian, though Sanborn also tracks down Cigar Store Punches, Jockeys, Jim Crows, and a Cigar Star Goddess of Liberty. .
