Initial conclusion to an intended trilogy begun with O Beulah Land (1956) and Know Nothing (1960) -- later expanding to The Beulah Quintet -- but punted from the series and replaced by 1982's The Killing Ground. Settle wrote in a 1997 Washington Post article how Viking insisted on threat of canceling the book and payment that she remove a vital opening section about a coal strike, succumbing to which Settle describes as "the worst mistake of my writing career" and "a total disaster," yielding the worst reviews she ever received.
