Small folio (29cm); full modern blind-embossed calf to style, spine in six compartments with brown gilt spine label, all edges marbled, retaining original endpapers; [4],309pp.; engraved folding map titled "Part of Africa," one additional folding view, engraved architectural title page adorned with seven allegorical figures signed in image Francisco Delaram, forty-seven steel engraved illustrations throughout text. Very occasional contemporary marginalia; a Near Fine example in a handsome new binding.
Significant contribution to contemporary travel and ethnographical studies by George Sandys (1578-1644), who later also gained recognition for his translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Multiple editions of this travel narrative were published in his lifetime, though now often found lacking the map. At the time this edition was published Sandys was serving as a member of council of the Virginia crown colony, a position he held from 1624 until his return to England in 1631.
