Autograph Letter from an Ohio Union Private to His Wife and Children
Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, MD: 1864. Very Good+. Item #48075
Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, MD: August 1, 1864. Two-page autograph letter on single leaf of plain ruled stationery (24.5x19.5cm) with accompanying envelope addressed to Mrs. John E. Kinder, Miamisburg, Ohio. Approx. 375 words. Previous mail folds, else a Very Good, fresh example.
Missive from a Private mustered into "D" Co. Ohio 131st Infantry in May, 1864. Kinder evidently is responding to a letter from home, reassuring his wife "You write as though you were afraid of me being picked up by the bushwhacker in my country excursions, but I assure you that I have not run the least risk and also that I have quit going out. The weather is so hot that I only do what I am compelled to--that is go to the post office."
Kinder continues, "I suppose you would like to know my opinion of the draft. I will now say that I am done soldiering. I am satisfied that I will be exempt. Also if I should not, that I would pay any price for a substitute. My family are dearer to me than my party." At the time Kinder was thirty-four years old and was indeed mustered out on August 24, 1864.
Price: $250.00
