Rather scarce little oration by the twenty-four-year-old botanist and medical doctor Eli Ives (1779-1861). The oration addresses in particular the newly discovered composition of the atmosphere and "the beautiful process of nature, the purification of the atmosphere, by means of the respiration of plants" (p. 8).
