Tokio [Tokyo]: [s.i.], 1908. First Separate Edition, originally published in "Tokyo Mainichi Shimbun" in the same year. Octavo; printed wraps; 8pp. [English text] + [18]pp. [Japanese text]. Frontis portrait of Townsend Harris; errata slip. Light wear; a few minor nicks; smudging; still Very Good.
An olive branch of friendship from the Japanese statesman, presented to the men of the "Great White Fleet" by the business magnate and "Father of Japanese Capitalism" Shibusawa Eiichi, this work described the positive aspects of Japanese-U.S. relations from the previous fifty years. The Great White Fleet toured the globe from 1907 to 1909 by order of President Theodore Roosevelt; the goal was to both repair diplomatic relations, especially with Japan, and to show the United States' naval ability and power.
