Biography of Civil War surgeon and prisoner of war, abolitionist, suffragist, dress reformer, and Medal of Honor recipient Mary Edward Walker. Trained in medicine at Syracuse, Walker became the first female surgeon in the US Army, and is the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor. She was frequently criticized and even arrested for wearing men's clothes, typically dressing in pants and suspenders rather than the usual women's wardrobe, which she found uncomfortable, restricting, and unhygienic.
