New York: Leavitt & Allen, 1847 or later. 16mo (13 cm); 128pp; three handcolored plates, including frontis. Boards in brown pebbled cloth with gilt decoration and stamping; page edges gilt. Boards rubbed, bumped and worn at corners and spine ends with mild soiling to covers and oxidation to gilt. Binding cocked but intact. Interior lightly foxed with a few brief pencil marks, otherwise clean. A just about Very Good example.
To circumvent etiquette during the Victorian period and earlier, couples and others could communicate through bouquets using representative flowers. For example, if you wanted to express grief, tears, and despondency, a bouquet of hyacinths, heleniums, and geraniums would be the ticket. Beware, you dazzling, dangerous, and cold hearted friend: Oleander, snap dragons, ivy, and lettuce.
