Nine 12mo volumes (17cm); full contemporary calf, elaborate gilt spines in six compartments, red and black spine pieces; collated, presumed complete with double portrait frontispieces at head of Vol. I. Moderate wear and a bit of dryness to leather margins, tiny chip at Vol. I spine crown, else a Very Good set.

Detailed biography of Charles VI "the mad" (1368-1422) published under the authorship of the popular novelist and historian Marguerite de Lussan (1682-1758) though attributed to Nicolas Baudot de Juilly per OCLC. In any event Lussan made a name for herself not just through her apparent gluttony (which eventually killed her) but also for her court histories and novels for which she is known to have conducted original archival research. "Prudhomme recognized Lussan's credentials as a historian, but also noted her carelessness" (Global Encyclopedia of Historical Writing Vol. II).

Provenance: Contemporary ex libris in each volume of Robert Darcy, Earl of Holderness (1718-1778), the British diplomat who served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1754 to 1761.
