Extended essay on women and fiction based on lectures Woolf gave in 1928, arguing that women needed money and a room if they were to write fiction. Woolf foresaw the response she would receive upon publication, noting in her diary, "I forecast, then, that I shall get no criticism, except of the evasive jocular kind... also I shall be attacked for a feminist & hinted at for a sapphist," she continues, "I am afraid it will not be taken seriously... It is a trifle, I shall say; so it is, but I wrote it with ardour and conviction."
