Witches Coven #276 Supports Inez Garcia
San Francisco, CA? s.i., 1975. Fair. Item #50014
San Francisco, CA? n.d. but 1975. Pictorial broadside flyer (35.5x21.5cm) printed offset on goldenrod stock. Margins quite brittle and heavily chipped with large losses along bottom edge with subsequent closed tear briefly affecting image. A Fair at best example.
Evidently unrecorded feminist broadside issued by the (presumably fictitious) union the Witches Coven #276 during the 1975 trial of Inez Garcia. Garcia was tried for the murder of the man who had aided in her rape in 1974 after a party she was throwing turned violent. She and her roommate, the Texan drug dealer Fred Medrano, had pursued the two perpetrators, Louie Castillo who had committed the rape, and Miguel Jimenez, who had aided him. When Jimenez brandished a knife at her, Garcia shot and killed him with a shotgun. Her first trial was defended with funds raised by the Inez Garcia Defense Committee by the celebrity lawyer Charles Garry, who had also represented Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. Garry argued that Garcia was operating under "diminished capacity" but failed to convince the jury. She was convicted of second-degree murder. However, after her appeal was heard a re-trial was granted and Garcia was represented by the feminist lawyer Susan Jordan, who argued this was a case of self-defense. The jury acquitted her.
This broadside may very well be issued part of the Inez Garcia Defense Committee campaign, adorned with the silhouette of a witch brandishing the female symbol like a sword, riding not a broomstick but a shotgun, a sly reference to the weapon Garcia used in self-defense.
