Virginia City, NV: John S. Noe, 1881. Very Good. Item #50089
Virginia City, NV: John S. Noe, photographer, 1881. Original albumen photograph (16x21cm) affixed to card mount (23.5x28cm), printed caption at bottom edge of mount. Mount toned and lightly warped, else Very Good, the image well fixed.
Group shot of a party of twenty-three men emerging from the Bonanza Mines with their oil lamps. The party consisted of members of a delegation of Frenchmen who toured the United States in 1881 to mark the centennial of the battle of Yorktown, VA, the French and American armies having played a pivotal role in the siege against the British forces. A contemporary newspaper article from November, 1881, noted that the French delegation had disbanded but that a smaller party of its members still intended to travel west "to study American life and manners on the frontiers of civilization." Presumably these men are from that party, photographed by the young local photographer John S. Noe, who died eight years later, aged forty-four, of dropsy..
