New York: Macmillan Company, 1921. Very Good-. Item #50310
New York: Macmillan Company, 1921. Reprint. Octavo (19cm); publisher's brown cloth, gilt-lettered spine; xx,[2],565pp.; illus. throughout. Cloth margins a bit worn with brief exposure at corners, rear hinge crudely reinforced with old tape. About Very Good. Contemporary bookseller rubberstamp of Leary's Book Store in Philadelphia to front pastedown and later (1997) pencil gift inscription to front free endpaper.
Provenance: Mid-20th century ownership ex libris of neurologist Harold Stevens (1911-2003) together with his signature to front pastedown. The bookplate is adorned with a remarkable (and upsetting) woodcut illustration of a vomit-spewing patient whose brain machine is being tinkered with by a team of doctors. Harold Stevens was himself a renowned professor of neurology and practicing brain surgeon who published the paper "Clinical and EEG Investigation of Prefrontal Lobotomy Patients," based on thirty prefrontal lobotomies he performed at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC. Among his most famous (non-lobotomized) patients was Ezra Pound, in whom Stevens found no evidence of psychosis: "That anti-Semitic SOB....we should have shot him, the treasonous bastard" (Harold L. Klawans, Trials of an Expert Witness (1991), p. 223).
