The Letters of a Portuguese Nun

London: David Nutt, 1893. Very Good. Item #6424

London: David Nutt, 1893. First Thus. Duodecimo. 209 pages. Blue cloth stamped in decorative gilt. Worn at extremities and cracked at top of front joint. Binding and interior are sound.

A sensation upon its publication in 1669, this epistolary work of fiction has had its authorship disputed over the centuries. Here attributed to Alcoforado, many scholars believe de la Vergne to be the real author. Albert Camus does clear things up a little in The Fall, declaring, "I was not the Portuguese nun."
