Chinese Works of Art 2006

London: A & J Speelman, 2006. Very Good / Very Good. Item #8953

London: A & J Speelman, 2006. First Edition. Quarto (32x25.5x2cm); 123pp. Full-page and close-detail full-color photographs of 55 precious objects, or sets of objects, as part of an A&J Speelman celebratory exhibition. Two gatefold spreads: one of lacquer tables; the other of eight erotic plaques in ivory.

Photographic dust jacket; volume bound in chocolate linen with gilt stamping on spine and front panel. Brown silk bookmark bound in. Jacket shows light bumps to corners and nudging at spine ends, with corresponding pressure to corners of boards. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

The objects are all extraordinary and the photographs of them very fine; the photos in this listing can't do the images justice. The furnishings, art pieces, and objets de vertu include Canton, cloisonné, and champlevé enamel; furniture; glass; ivory and rhinoceros horn; lacquer; metalwork; porcelain; stone; textiles; and wood pieces. The objects range from the Tang through the Qing dynasties and periods, which is to say from the 7th to the cusp of the 19th centuries.

A & J Speelman has been a leading dealer in Asian art since the late 18th century, originally in Holland, subsequently in London.
